Emergency Management Agency
The Macon - Bibb County Office of Emergency Management has been an integral part of the organizational structure of the City of Macon and Bibb County since 1961. The mission of the Macon - Bibb County Emergency Management Agency is to prepare for, respond to, and recover from a host of potential hazards and threats that may affect the citizens of Macon - Bibb County.
In doing so, this agency implements the Emergency Operations Plan in coordinating all emergency response and organizations. Emergency Management is also responsible for educating the public in the area of Disaster Preparedness. Our agency has qualified for the Federal Performance Partnership Agreement, which insures the city and county federal disaster assistance and individual assistance in the event of a major disaster. In addition to being eligible for federal assistance, our personal qualifications which are based on meeting state mandated training requirements enable us to receive funding from the federal government to aid in our mitigation efforts. Therefore, we at Macon - Bibb are committed to taking a proactive approach to the Emergency Management efforts in our community.
The principles of Emergency Management are mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. Mitigation and preparedness are proactive functions, implemented before an emergency occurs. Response and recovery activities occur following a disaster.
- Mitigation includes the activities that are undertaken to prevent a disaster, reduce the chances of an emergency happening, or reduce the damaging effects of unavoidable emergencies.
- Preparedness includes plans or preparations made prior to a disaster to save lives and property and to expedite response operations after a disaster occurs.
- Response is the implementation of preparedness plans, immediate actions taken to save lives and prevent further property damage.
- Recovery involves the development, coordination, and execution of service- and site-restoration plans and the reconstitution of government operations and services through individual, private sector, nongovernmental, and public assistance programs. Short-term recovery includes damage assessment and the return of vital functions, such as utilities and emergency services, to minimum operating standards. When rebuilding and re-locating is due to damaged property, long-term recovery activities may continue for years.
The Macon - Bibb County Emergency Management Agency is responsible for the coordination of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery efforts pertaining to major emergencies or disasters arising from natural or manmade causes. This is in accordance with State Statutes and Federal Laws. We provide a number of services important to community awareness and preparedness.
