Birthplace of the great Southern poet, Sidney Lanier, this cottage has been converted to a museum which is owned and operated by the Middle Georgia Historical Society. Lanier was a poet, musician, and scholar who was nationally known and particularly beloved in the South. He served in the Confederate Army until captured aboard a blockade runner and confined at Fort Lookout, Maryland.

The museum displays Lanier memorabilia and the gift shop sells books on the Civil War, items on Lanier, and other related articles. Membership in the Middle Georgia Historical Society is available. The organization uses the Sidney Lanier Cottage as its headquarters and publishes a quarterly newspaper.
