| The
Public Works Department provides general street
and storm sewer repair and maintenance, street
cleaning, as well as solid waste collection
and disposal. These functions are divided into
two divisions: Streets Division and Solid Waste
Division with support services by the Public
Works Administration. The Streets Division is
responsible for all maintenance of city streets,
including storm sewer maintenance and repair,
street sweeping, sidewalk repair, asphalt patching,
permit cut repair, as well as laying of pipe.
This division works closely with other city
departments to reduce the expense of hiring
outside contractors.
The Streets Division is divided
into work teams operating on a schedule designed
to efficiently maintain streets and storm sewers.
The city is divided into five sections and work
crews dedicate a specific number of hours to
completing work orders in each section.
The Solid Waste Division is
responsible for the collection of recyclables
and sanitation as well as the landfill operation.
Household garbage, yard trimmings, and recyclables
are picked up weekly; i.e. Monday - South Macon,
Tuesday - West Macon. Although they all are
picked up on the same day, each is picked up
by a different truck at a different time.
City sanitation code compliance
is assured through the efforts of two sanitation
inspectors. They provide for the removal of
dead animals from city streets and animal hospitals
daily.
The certified landfill is located on Eleventh
Street and is open:

Residents
can dispose of loads less than a thousand pounds
at the landfill twice a week at no charge.
Loads between 1000 and 1999 lbs. cost $10 per
load. Additional loads per week less than 1000
lbs. cost $5 per load, and additional loads
per week between 1000 lbs. and 1999 lbs. cost
10 per load. Any load over 2000 lbs. cost $27.50
per ton. Commercial customers are charged a
$27.50 per ton fee. The fee is based on actual
and projected cost recovery for landfill operation
and is among the lowest in the country. Payment
can be made by Check, Money Order, or Credit
Card. NO CASH WILL BE ACCEPTED.
The City of Macon observes
nine holidays; however, all garbage, trash,
and recycling will be picked up on a continued
four-day schedule as the crews will still work
a four-day shift. If a holiday falls during
the week, your collection will be pushed forward
one day. For example, during Labor Day week,
Monday routes are picked up on Tuesday. On Thanksgiving
week, Thursday route will be picked up Friday.
